Your Complete Guide To Every Marvel TV Show Currently In The Works

Have you noticed that there are currently a whole lot of superhero TV shows around? Well, of course you have - you seemingly can't get away from capes and cowls on the small screen at the moment. It's a fairly even split between Marvel and DC for TV dominance, too - e.g. DC have The CW's Arrowverse while Marvel have their Netflix shows - but it looks like the House of Ideas will leave their Distinguished Competition far behind in the dust very soon. As of March 2017, there are an impressive 13 television shows currently in the works that are based on Marvel Comics properties. Many will be part of the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, others will be connected to Fox's X-Men franchise and at least one will be a rogue, standalone player. Add those shows to the three that are currently on the air - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Legion and the soon-to-arrive Iron Fist - and that's a pretty substantial number of Marvel TV shows. So, how are you meant to keep track of them all? With this handy guide, of course. Over the next few pages, we've compiled the rundown on each new series and why it needs to be on your radar. The Defenders Release info: Summer 2017, Netflix Cast: Charlie Cox, Kristen Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones are the titular Defenders while Hollywood legend Sigourney Weaver is their nemesis, Alexandra. The show will also feature just about the entire supporting cast of the Netflixverse, including Rosario Dawson, Elodie Yung, Simone Missick, Elden Hensen, Deborah Ann Woll, Scott Glenn and Carrie-Anne Moss. Crew: Daredevil season 2 showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie will helm this miniseries of eight episodes. Fellow showrunners Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones), Scott Buck (Iron Fist) and Cheo Hodari Coker (Luke Cage) also had some input. What to expect: The plot of this one is being kept tightly under wraps, so we don't know what to expect at the moment apart from the fact that our four heroes will come together to save New York (and probably themselves). Why you should be excited: Because it's the culmination of what the four Marvel-Netflix series have been working towards. In effect, The Defenders is a small-screen, street-smart version of The Avengers. The Punisher Release info: 2017, Netflix Cast: Jon Bernthal reprises his Daredevil role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in his own show. Ebon Moss-Bachrach joins him as his sidekick Micro while Ben Barnes will play his nemesis, Billy Russo/Jigsaw. Deborah Ann Woll will also turn up as Karen Page. Crew: Steve Lightfoot will helm The Punisher as showrunner. Lightfoot has worked on various TV series in both the UK and the US. Most notably, he was an exec producer and writer on Bryan Fuller's acclaimed Hannibal. What to expect: After Castle finally gained his skull-marked vest at the tail-end of Daredevil season 2, we expect that his solo series will see him much closer to the Punisher of the comics, including introducing familiar characters such as Micro and Jigsaw. Why you should be excited: Bernthal practically stole the show in Daredevil season 2 and was by far the best of the four on-screen iterations of the character we've seen so far. To have him lead his own series should be a real ultra-violent treat. Daredevil (Season 3) Release info: 2018, Netflix Cast and crew: Marvel hasn't announced anything just yet, but it's surely a dead cert that Charlie Cox, Elden Hensen, Karen Page, Elodie Yung and the rest of the main cast will return. Ramirez and Petrie will also reprise their position as co-showrunners, after taking over from season 1's Steven DeKnight in the second run. What to expect: One thing we surely have to see this season is the belated introduction of Bullseye, Daredevil's other arch-enemy aside from Kingpin. Given some of the ideas set up in season 2 - Kingpin wanting revenge on Matt Murdock and Karen finding out Matt's secret identity - it's also likely that the season will adapt the "Born Again" storyline from the comics. Why you should be excited: Because it's the next chapter in what's still Marvel's most popular and acclaimed TV show of all-time. Jessica Jones (Season 2) Release info: 2018, Netflix Cast and crew: Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville and Carrie-Ann Moss will presumably return for season 2 - though don't expect David Tennant to be back. Melissa Rosenberg will definitely serve as showrunner though, while True Blood and The Returned exec Raelle Tucker has joined as EP and writer. All 13 episodes will also be helmed by a female director. What to expect: After the death of Jessica's tormentor Kilgrave in season 1, season 2 will see her facing new demons, such as her guilt over his murder. "I think one of the things I would be able to do now, that’s harder to do in the first season, is to really expand on the ensemble," said Rosenberg. "I would hope to further expand on the ensemble, and on Jessica’s world." Why you should be excited: Jessica Jones was one of the edgiest, richest and most mature superhero shows we've ever seen. If the same level of quality can be achieved in its sequel season, it should be a real blast. Luke Cage (Season 2) Release info: 2018/2019, Netflix Cast and crew: Mike Colter will obviously reappear as the man with unbreakable skin, while it's also likely that Alfre Woodard and Theo Rossi will return as villainous duo Mariah Dillard and Shades, respectively. The odds are that Rosario Dawson will turn up too, as Luke and Claire Temple will presumably rekindle their romance once he's out of Seagate. What to expect: After The Defenders will no doubt see him break out of Seagate Prison once again, there are many places that season 2 could go. Luke will have to face off against Mariah and Shades again, and there are even hints that we could be about to see the Heroes for Hire - Luke and Iron Fist's crime-fighting organization - form. Why you should be excited: Much like Jessica Jones, the all-round strength of Luke Cage - in terms of its characters, maturity and social commentary - is enough to get us excited for season 2 without knowing a thing about it. Inhumans Release info: September 1st (cinematic release)/September 26th (TV release), ABC. Cast: Anson Mount is Black Bolt, the Inhuman king, while Serinda Swan is his queen, Medusa. Iwan Rheon, meanwhile, is Black Bolt's brother Maximus, who thirsts after the throne, while Ken Leung is the king's cousin and closest advisor, Karnak. Other roles are played by Eme Ikwuakor (Gorgon), Isabelle Cornish (Crystal), Mike Moh (Triton), Sonya Balmores (Auran) and Ellen Woglom in an undisclosed part. Crew: Marvel have entrusted Inhumans in the care of showrunner Scott Buck, who also serves the same role on Iron Fist. What to expect: After the concept of Inhumans has been introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this show will focus on the royal family and the land of Attilan. In an ingenious move, Marvel will release the first two episodes in IMAX cinemas, two weeks before the eight episode series will air on TV. Why you should be excited: As well as introducing an extensive fresh mythology to the MCU, Inhumans blurs the lines between Marvel's movie and television output in perhaps their most ambitious show yet. Runaways Release info: TBA (likely 2018), Hulu. Cast: The team of teen runaways consists of Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez. Their villainous parents, collectively known as The Pride, include Randy Sarks, Angel Parker, Brittany Ishibashi and James Marsters. Crew: Creative partners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage - previously of Gossip Girl, The O.C. and Chuck fame - will serve as showrunners. The pair had spent a year conversing with Marvel Studios before they finally got the go-ahead to make the series. What to expect: Six teenagers from Los Angeles discover that their parents are part of a supervillain group known as The Pride. With the powers, gifts and inventions they've inherited, they decide to runaway and stop their parents' evil scheme for world domination. Why you should be excited: Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways comic series is a brilliant teen-orientated take on the Marvel universe, with lots of great Young Adult drama, humour and superhero action. Hopefully, the show will replicate that success on screen. Cloak And Dagger Release info: Winter 2018, Freeform. Cast and crew: Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph will star as the titular twosome, Tandy Bowen/Dagger and Tyrone Johnson/Cloak, while Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, James Saito and J.D. Evermore will appear in supporting roles. Joe Pokaski will serve as showrunner, and he definitely has superhero pedigree, as he previously worked on Heroes and Daredevil. What to expect: Cloak and Dagger are one of Marvel's most enduring couples, so expect this series to be a full-on superhero romance. It's the usual story - boy who grew up on the streets gains dark powers and meets privileged girl with light powers. Why you should be excited: Cloak and Dagger will appeal to a fresh audience who are perhaps not usually into superheroes - the teen romance crowd - but comic book aficionados will likely find much to enjoy as well. Damage Control Release info: TBA, ABC. Cast and crew: No cast have been contracted as yet, but the last we heard Ben Karlin (The Colbert Report) was the showrunner of this half-hour sitcom set in the MCU. What to expect: Damage Control will follow the tough but hilarious lives of the team of workers who have to clear up the streets of New York after Marvel's superheroes have trashed them during their battles. Since DC's similarly-conceived Powerless got off the ground, news has been quiet about this show, but it hasn't been officially cancelled just yet, so we have to assume it's still in the works. Why you should be excited: If it ever actually materializes, Damage Control should be a unique, subversive slant on the familiar Marvel Cinematic Universe. New Warriors Release info: TBA. Cast and crew: No names attached as yet and Marvel hasn't even officially confirmed it, but the show is reportedly being pitched to various networks. What to expect This sitcom will focus on the New Warriors, a team of glory-hunting teen superheroes. It's thought that the star of the series will be fan-favourite Doreen Green AKA the unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Why you should be excited: It's another fresh take on the MCU, which will feature a popular comics character we never thought we would see on screen. John Ridley's Marvel Series Release info: TBA, ABC. Cast and Crew: No one except Ridley himself at this stage. What to expect: Here's a surprise. Academy Award winner writer John Ridley - of 12 Years a Slave fame - is reportedly developing a new TV series at Marvel based on a pre-existing comic book character. And that's all we know right now. Why you should be excited: Because it's an intriguing project from a talented creator. Who knows what the series might be.... Matt Nix's X-Men series Release info: TBA (presumably 2018), Fox. Cast: Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker and Natalie Alyn Lind will portray the central Stewart family, while Jamie Chung, Emma Dumont and Sean Teale will play classic comic book mutants Blink, Polaris and Eclipse, respectively. Crew: Burn Notice's Matt Nix serves as the showrunner, while X-Men movie supremo Bryan Singer will direct the pilot episode. What to expect: We don't have a title for the series yet, but we do know that it will follow Reed and Kate Stewart as they go on the run to protect their mutant daughter Laura and end up with an X-Men-type group of mutants. Why you should be excited: Unlike Legion, this series - with an incredibly strong cast, by the way - will have very clear ties to the movies and should be the start of a new X-Men TV universe. Scarlet Release info: TBA, Cinemax. Cast and crew: No cast yet, but Scarlet's creator Brian Michael Bendis will be on hand to adapt her for the small screen. What to expect: First up, Scarlet won't be part of the MCU, as it's based on a character from Marvel's grittier Icon imprint. Also, for those unfamiliar with the source material, Scarlet is an aggressively strong anti-hero who triggers a revolution in American society. Why you should be excited: Based on an anarchic and action-packed comic, Scarlet promises to be a Marvel series unlike any other.
