Rose Tyler in Doctor Who

Doctor Who Fans Think Billie Piper’s Returning As Rose Tyler

If you're part of the Doctor Who fandom on social media, you might be aware that it's a regular fixture during filming of the new season that a rumor will start claiming Billie Piper is going to reprise her role as Rose Tyler. Often it starts with the actress teasing that she's got some big news coming up, which hopeful Whovians think is going to do with the sci-fi show but it invariably ends up being a completely different project.

Well, we have another of these situations on our hands today, as Piper has done just that once again. However, this time around there is actually some more evidence that adds credence to the idea that Rose might really be about to make a comeback in season 12 opposite Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

The Who Show podcast Twitter account shared a thread pulling together all the evidence on the topic, and the most intriguing aspect of it is that several Who accounts have been contacted by various sources saying that Rose could return.

Articles from last year also claimed that showrunner Chris Chibnall had talked with Piper about potentially bringing her back on board.

Furthermore, there’s a leaked photo from the set that contains a script for an upcoming episode, and The Who Show thinks the title of the script could include the word “Rose’s”.

The only hitch is that Piper allegedly liked a tweet that suggests her news isn’t anything to do with Doctor Who.

Though Piper hasn’t been part of the show full-time since 2006, her return isn’t as unlikely as it sounds. She’s come back multiple times since, in 2008, 2010 and 2013, and still plays the role of Rose opposite David Tennant for Big Finish’s audio dramas. It’s not like the actress has tried to put Doctor Who behind her, so if there was a storyline that called for her to be a part of it, Piper would probably be happy to sign up.

Seeing as the production team kept all their secrets close to their chest for season 11, we’ll likely have to be patient with this one and wait until Doctor Who season 12 materializes in early 2020. But in the meantime, tell us, do you think Rose is set for a return?
