Lauren Cohan on The Walking Dead

Don’t Expect To See Much Of Maggie In The Walking Dead Season 9

The Walking Dead fans were understandably concerned a few months back when it seemed that Lauren Cohan was at risk of leaving the hit AMC series due to a pay dispute with the network. It sounded like things had been resolved when the actress eventually signed up for season 9, but the situation was complicated again recently as Cohan's new show, crime dramedy Whiskey Cavalier for ABC, has been ordered to series.

The Walking Dead fans were understandably concerned a few months back when it seemed that Lauren Cohan was at risk of leaving the hit AMC series due to a pay dispute with the network. It sounded like things had been resolved when the actress eventually signed up for season 9, but the situation was complicated again recently as Cohan’s new show, crime dramedy Whiskey Cavalier for ABC, has been ordered to series.

So, what effect will this have on her future with TWD? Well, it seems that the actress, who’s been with the zombie drama since season 2, is currently only free for the first half of the upcoming run. According to TVLine, Cohan will indeed return as Maggie and is set to appear in six out of the first eight episodes of season 9. Beyond that, however, it’s unclear how involved she’ll be. From what we understand, if AMC wants her to stick around, there may need to be some further pay negotiations.

As Deadline told us a while ago, the actress’ ABC deal “allows her to shoot Walking Dead episodes during her Whiskey Cavalier hiatus, but those stints would have to be negotiated individually.” In other words, it sounds like it may be a bit complicated trying to slot Maggie into TWD episodes beyond the first half of the next season.

Even if both parties can come to an agreement, it’s pretty clear that we’ll be seeing less of Maggie when the show returns. That’s certainly upsetting to hear and also contrasts with the season 8 finale, which promised internal conflict between the survivors, as Cohan’s character showed signs of plotting against Rick, as she doesn’t agree with his decision to keep Negan alive.

We’ll keep you posted if and when any further updates arise as production on The Walking Dead season 9 continues, but like we just said, don’t expect to see too much of Maggie in the next run.
