The first couple of official images from Starz’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s mega-popular fantasy novel, American Gods, have been released by EW. They provide glimpses of the three of the story’s weird and wonderful characters in action while enjoying an evening at Jack’s Crocodile Bar:Â Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber).
McShane’s Wednesday will become a mentor of sorts to Shadow (we won’t reveal their real identities/relationship just in case you haven’t read the book and would rather be surprised), and in these photos he seems impressed that the youngster is able to hold his own against Mad Sweeney, who is actually a rowdy, drunken leprechaun.
Yeah… things get even weirder, trust me.
In a recent interview, co-showrunner Michael Green provided an idea of what to expect from the story, and talked about the challenges of avoiding depicting the characters as some kind of superhero team.
It’s really much more of an immigration story than it is a god story. One of the biggest challenges was stripping the idea of gods as X-Men or giant empowered creatures who stomp on cities and throw the oceans. We wanted them to be people with problems. It’s not about lightning bolts – it’s about the question of day-to-day survival.
American Gods will air sometime in 2017.
