The Flash Midseason Premiere Synopsis Teases A Metahuman Cure

The Flash returns for the rest of its fifth season later this month with the punningly-titled episode "The Flash and the Furious." And ahead of the Scarlet Speedster sprinting his way back onto our screens, The CW has now given us the first synopsis for the outing.

Seen below, it promises a metahuman team-up between an old foe of Team Flash and a new threat to Central City. What’s more, the B-plot will see Caitlin and Cisco work on developing a metahuman cure.

While Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) grapples with the revelation that Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) killed her grandmother, Team Flash must stop the formidable team-up of a newly sprung from jail Weather Witch (guest star Reina Hardesty) and Silver Ghost (guest star Gabrielle Walsh), a new meta-tech villain who can control engines and motorized technology. Meanwhile, Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) discuss creating a meta-human cure.

Weather Witch was last seen in episode 7, “O Come, All Ye Thankful,” in which she was introduced as the estranged daughter of Mark Mardon AKA the Weather Wizard, a frequent rogue from The Flash‘s early seasons. As one of the new breed of meta-tech-humans – those connected to tech enhanced by dark matter – the Weather Witch used her powers to get revenge for her father, and it looks like she’s not done yet.

Meanwhile, the idea of a metahuman cure’s an interesting one. Previously, that concept hadn’t come up on the show, as metas have always been presented as either heroes using their powers for good or villains using them for evil. With Cicada going around killing off metas, though, the show can explore those average joe metas who perhaps want to get rid of their abilities. But will Caitlin and Cisco help them, or will the series take a leaf out of the X-Men and have the metas embrace what they are?

Also interesting is that back in the show’s 100th episode, Nora was revealed to be in cahoots with Reverse-Flash (once again wearing Harrison Wells’ face, but this time with blond hair). When The Flash returns, it looks like we’ll get to see her doubts about working with the man who’s done so much damage to her family. Although, we’ll have to wait to find out about the origins of this unlikely partnership, as that won’t be revealed until the upcoming flashback episode which will be devoted to her past.
