Things are about to get very complicated for the West family, and the long lost wife of Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and mother of Iris (Candice Patton) is set to make her grand entrance sometime during season 2 of the CW’s The Flash, as played by Candyman actress Vanessa Williams.

Variety reported the news, but also mention that all details relating to the manner of her return and the exact episode she’ll debut in are being kept under wraps – though we can speculate based on the DC Comics history of the character(s). See, Iris West actually has two mothers: Nadine West (the most likely candidate), and Fran Russell, her biological mother from the thirteenth century. This show’s messing around with time travel and is in the process of setting up an alternate reality, so anything’s possible.

So far, we’ve had no mention of this character, so the writers were pretty much free to make up any backstory they wanted, but with Wally West also set to make his debut this season, don’t expect Mrs. West’s long absence to be explained away in a simple line or two – chances are this one is going to get complex.

The Flash season two premieres Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
