The actor spoke to ComicBook.com at this past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con and revealed that there were not one but two things that happen in the season’s first episode that he’s wanted to see on the show for five years. Here’s how he explained it to them:

“In the first episode… I don’t want to tell you too much, but in the first episode, two things happen that I’ve wanted to happen for five years. One of them is a huge action sequence that is out of the comics, and I remember thinking when I read that ‘We’ll never be able to do that. Which sucks, because that’s so cool.’ And we’re doing it, yeah. We’re doing it in the first episode. And I’m really excited about it, because I know our visual effects guys are going to kill it, and what we shot was awesome.”

It’s hard to tell what Gustin’s referring to right now, but we can assume that this “huge action sequence” will involve multiple speedsters, as Barry Allen will be joined by both the returning Wally West and Nora Allen, his daughter from the future, in the premiere. However, the actor went on to tease that the other thing he’d been waiting for to happen is featured in the trailer, which gives us a good idea of what he’s talking about.

“And then yeah, there’s one thing that happens in the first episode as well, that will be a little teaser of the trailer today. So it’s something that I’ve been wanting, and that I know some fans have been wanting for a long time. So we’re doing a couple cool things.”

Having seen the trailer, Gustin’s presumably referring to the fact that Barry will finally get his classic ring this season, the one that contains a compressed version of his suit. It seems that the Scarlet Speedster will lose his costume in the premiere before Nora gives him the ring that she’s brought with her from the future. Despite this being a fixture of the comics, it’s taken five years for The Flash to bring it into the Arrowverse.

Other elements of season 5 that fans should be looking forward to include an exploration of Killer Frost’s origins, a team-up between Gorilla Grodd and King Shark and the terrifying new big bad Cicada. All of that and more will be on display when The Flash returns to The CW on October 9th.
