Constantine on Legends of Tomorrow

Constantine’s Legends Of Tomorrow Appearance Leaves The Door Open For More

Fans were thrilled when it was announced last year that Matt Ryan's John Constantine would be appearing on Legends of Tomorrow. Though his solo series on NBC was cancelled after only 13 episodes, Ryan's performance as the Hellblazer was acclaimed by DC diehards and he was soon folded into the Arrowverse with a guest spot on Arrow. Sadly, it's taken him a couple of years to come back since then, but he'll soon return to our screens and if the actor is to be believed, there may be even more opportunities for him to appear in the near future.

Fans were thrilled when it was announced last year that Matt Ryan’s John Constantine would be appearing on Legends of Tomorrow. Though his solo series on NBC was cancelled after only 13 episodes, Ryan’s performance as the Hellblazer was acclaimed by DC diehards and he was soon folded into the Arrowverse with a guest spot on Arrow. Sadly, it’s taken him a couple of years to come back since then, but he’ll soon return to our screens and if the actor is to be believed, there may be even more opportunities for him to appear in the near future.

While speaking to ComicBook.com, Ryan confirmed that his upcoming episode of Legends of Tomorow, the midseason premiere, titled “Daddy Darhkest,” leaves the door open for him to return to the time-travelling show. In particular, the actor thinks there’s much more to mine in the dynamic between Constantine and the villainous Damien Darhk. For those who might forget, Neal McDonough’s sorcerer previously encountered the occult detective in Arrow‘s “Haunted” and will meet him again in LoT.

“When [Darhk] was first mentioned in Arrow, there was obviously some connection between him and John. And then with everything that happens in this episode, it does leave the door open a bit. There is obviously some other kind of relationship that they’ve had or backstory that goes on between him and John, which there is potential to explore.”

Ryan also elaborated on the episode itself, explaining that it possesses a similar vibe to the aforementioned NBC Constantine series. Specifically, the actor noted how “Daddy Darhkest” will have a much darker tone than most Legends installments do, which helped his character slot into the show easier.

“It did feel like a Constantine episode in a way. Getting to do the exorcisms again is great because in the Arrow episode there’s only a little bit of the spells anythings, and there was quite a bit of that [in Legends] and it did feel like he was driving the episode. It was surprisingly darker than I thought it was going to be, which was great. I thought the tone of it was quite dark compared to what I’ve seen of previous episodes. I thought that was great, and that Constantine fitted right into that.”

Regardless of whether Constantine returns to live-action or not, we know for sure that Matt Ryan will be reprising the part very soon, as an animated webseries starring the character is set to debut on CW Seed later this year.

Legends of Tomorrow, meanwhile, returns on Monday, February 12th.
