Will Hannibal Lecter ever dine again?

Several years on from the moment NBC abruptly brought the axe down on its psychological horror show, and that question continues to keep fans up at night. After three seasons of arresting, visually astute television, Hannibal was pulled off the airwaves due to its low ratings, but there’ve always been whispers about a possible revival. In fact, former series showrunner Bryan Fuller has already teased a potential set-up for a fourth season, which would seemingly be the lovechild of “Inception meets Angel Heart.”

Alas, the song remains the same: Hannibal is still on the shelf, but it seems all hope isn’t lost. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting recently, star Mads Mikkelsen, offered an optimistic answer when asked about whether fans can expect to ever see a fourth run of the show.

“Yeah, I think there’s always new hope,” Mikkelsen told the outlet. “I haven’t heard anything specific. I know Bryan is still working on some ideas where we can find a new home for this. I also have a strong feeling that everybody who was involved in it would gladly pick up the glove again if that happens.”

Continuing on, the actor noted that while he doesn’t know where the show could materialize again, he can confirm that there’ve been talks with different studios.

“I don’t know where they looked,” Mikkelsen said. “That is above my paycheck, but I know they’ve been talking to different studios. I know that [Fuller] was working to get the rights to Silence of the Lambs so he could get in there and use some of those characters for his own universe. I have a hunch that might be where we’re going.”

Of course, this all may well lead to nothing, but it’s still nice to see that Mikkelsen remains optimistic about the chances of a fourth season happening. Then again, it’d certainly be a bit surprising if the show ever returned, as the numbers just weren’t there to justify keeping it on the air and we imagine it’d be a similar case if it were to make a comeback.

Who knows, though? Perhaps someone like Netflix can step in and save Hannibal? Time will tell, but it seems that those involved haven’t given up on it just yet and maybe one day, somebody will realize what a brilliant show this was and bring it back.
