A year after the final season of Showtime’s Dexter, Michael C. Hall is set to return to the small screen playing another complex antihero – though this one appears to be more into bank-robbing than bloodletting. The Emmy nominee is set to star in God Fearing Man, Stanley Kubrick’s unproduced drama which has been in development at Entertainment One since 2012.
British screenwriter Stephen R. Clark is penning the series, which will tell the stranger-than-fiction true story of Canadian minister Herbert Emerson Wilson, who eventually became one of the best safecrackers and most successful American bank robbers in the early 20th century. Hall is both starring as Wilson and executive-producing. Philip Hobbs, who worked with Kubrick for 15 years on projects including Full Metal Jacket, is also producing along with Philco Films’ Steve Lanning (The Secret Garden).

“Kubrick’s God Fearing Man presents a larger-than-life story with a complicated protagonist who undergoes a radical transformation. We knew we had to secure a leading man with the immense talent and charisma needed to carry the project, and we were dedicated to putting in the diligent time and effort to find the perfect fit. We cannot be more pleased to have Michael on board, who has time and again demonstrated an uncanny ability to portray captivating characters who must grapple with fundamental internal struggles.”
Hall is certainly a catch for the promising series. He earned Emmy nominations on five different occasions for his lead role on Dexter, and since that series ended, he’s been receiving raves for leading Jim Mickle’s neo-noir thriller Cold in July and Broadway play The Realistic Joneses. The actor has proven capable of flip-flopping between TV and film with grace, and it will be great to see him get the chance to again build a multifaceted character across the course of multiple episodes. Perhaps God Fearing Man will finally be the series that earns Hall the Emmy he so richly deserves.
