New Promo For The Flash Teases The Final Showdown With Cicada

Normally, we see superhero shows dispatch of their big bads during their season finales. In the case of The Flash, Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and the Thinker were each dealt with in the 23rd episode of their respective seasons. But when it comes to Cicada, it looks like he may exit a little earlier than his predecessors.

I first thought this to be a possibility once the network released the official synopsis for “Failure is an Orphan” a few weeks ago. And now that the first promo for said episode has debuted (seen at the top), I feel like that suspicion has been validated in some sense.

Of course, the producers could just be yanking our chain, but I’m not sure how much more there is to explore with the Cicada character. Plus, it also looks like the overarching narrative is about to transition to a different antagonist, that perhaps being Eobard Thawne.

Then again, it could be someone else entirely, as we know that Godspeed is set to debut no later than episode 5×18. And if you’re familiar with his comic book counterpart, then you know he’s not to be taken lightly. Heck, the guy is so fast that he can actually be in two places at once!

Getting back to the topic of a possible final showdown with Cicada, it should be intriguing to see how he reacts to the offer of being given a metahuman cure. His hatred of people with powers is well-documented, and this would be a non-violent solution to his problem. But if I had to wager a guess, he’s become addicted to the carnage and will reject Barry’s olive branch.

For more info on “Failure is an Orphan,” here’s the aforementioned synopsis:

THE META-CURE IS READY TO USE ON CICADA — With the meta-human cure ready to use, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Team Flash must figure out a way to subdue Cicada (Chris Klein) long enough to take it. Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) steps in to help with the plan. Meanwhile, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) eases back into work, and Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) isn’t happy about the way her dad plans to stop Cicada. Viet Nguyen directed the episode written by Zack Stentz (#516). Original airdate 3/12/2019.

The Flash airs on Tuesday nights on The CW.
