As fans know, CBS All Access is expanding the Star Trek franchise on TV in many exciting ways. As well as live-action series like Discovery and the upcoming Picard, two animated shows are also in development.

First, there’s the adult-oriented Lower Decks and also the previously-announced cartoon for a younger audience. And now, Variety’s reporting that this second project will be the first to move away from All Access and debut on a different network. Specifically, CBS is currently in the midst of negotiations with Nickelodeon.

Plot details remain unknown, but we can now say that the show’s being developed by writers Kevin and Dan Hageman. The duo have previously worked on the likes of Ninjago: Spirits of the Spinjitsu and Trollhunters. They also had a hand in the story of The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and Hotel Transylvania. Clearly, then, the Hagemans are a safe pair of hands for the series.

As for Lower Decks, a little more is known about that one. From Rick and Morty‘s Mike McMahon, the project will focus on the lower-ranked crew onboard one of the least impressive ships in the Starfleet armada. Effectively, it’s a spoof, acting as an expanded take on The Next Generation episode of the same name.

That one won’t be ready for a few more years, but Patrick Stewart’s much-anticipated new vehicle as Captain Jean-Luc Picard is now quickly approaching. It goes before cameras this April and is likely to land on the streaming service by the fall. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 is currently airing every Thursday on CBS All Access.

Suffice it to say, there’s a lot going on in the Trek universe right now and the future of the franchise looks brighter than ever.
