A new offering is set to join the broad library of Star Trek favorites, once Starfleet Academy finally arrives on Paramount Plus.
The fresh entry in the broad universe of sci-fi content was finally greenlit — after years of back and forth — in late March 2023. A series set at Starfleet Academy has been a potential addition to the Star Trek universe for actual decades — with the first idea cropping up in the early ‘90s — but this is the first real, concrete attempt to give the famed academy its own dedicated series.
News that yet another Star Trek offering is set to join the likes of Picard and Lower Decks delighted fans of the sprawling franchise, and quickly prompted people to seek out details about when they can enjoy the show for themselves.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy release window
Starfleet Academy was only recently announced, so concrete release dates are still a way’s out. We might be able to anticipate the general time when the series will release, however, based on its production timeline. The show will reportedly enter production in spring of 2024, which could put its official release date between 2025 and 2026.

The idea for a series set at Starfleet Academy has been around for decades, and it’s finally coming to fruition. The original idea behind the show may have seen audiences follow Spock, James T. Kirk, and Doctor McCoy in their early days, but the current vision for the show has shifted significantly. Instead of following established characters or plot lines, the series will reportedly introduce a new generation of Starfleet cadets.
According to StarTrek.com, the show sticks to the themes of hope, loyalty, and curiosity consistent across Star Trek releases, as it centers in on a fresh batch of Academy cadets. The site notes that the cadets will — under the “ watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors” — gradually “discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
Which characters might Starfleet Academy follow?
Very few familiar faces are likely to crop up in Starfleet Academy, but the show won’t rely on an entirely new cast. The only character that’s set to return — as of now, at least — is Star Trek Discovery’s First Officer Sylvia Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman. The character will enter the story as a teacher at the Academy, working to sculpt young minds and produce strong and capable members of Starfleet.
