‘The Mandalorian’ star Katee Sackhoff bafflingly defends Jar Jar Binks as her favorite ‘Star Wars’ character

Her explanation kind of makes sense.

Even though his reputation has somewhat softened over time, you’d be hard-pressed to find Jar Jar Binks as anyone’s favorite Star Wars character. Yet, these people do exist, somehow. The most prominent may be Katee Sackhoff – who plays Bo-Katan in the hit Disney Plus show The Mandalorian.

In a recent episode of the Inside Disney podcast, Sackhoff somehow defends her love of the objectively incredibly annoying character. To each their own, we guess. Here’s what she had to say about the much-maligned character from the prequels.

“I just think he’s funny, and his childlike glee is just really fun to me. And he’s all about making people’s lives easier, but he does just the opposite. He really just wants to be helpful but he’s terrible. Yeah, I love him I think he’s super cute.”

Well, that’s surprising. When she puts it like that it kind of does make sense. Jar Jar meant no harm to anyone, he was just annoying, despite himself. Never thought the day would come when someone actually viewed the character the way that George Lucas intended, much less 24 years after he was introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Sackhoff’s character Bo-Katan exists in the same universe as Jar Jar, and she made a dour appearance in The Mandalorian‘s season 3 premiere, where she was in a much different place than when we last saw her. In an interview with Deadline, she revealed what happened during the time between seasons. Here’s what she said:

“She has had time to lose all her people. They’re not following her anymore, which means she’s not a leader without the darksaber, but she doesn’t know how to go about getting the darksaber in such a way that’s going to result in her not losing her people. That means she’s not going to — we have six episodes left. It’s just that at this impasse right here that we’re at in this first episode. She cannot see a path that she hasn’t taken already that hasn’t failed her.”

Oh, and one more thing. She was asked whether she would be in the upcoming Star Wars original series Ahsoka.

“I can’t reveal anything. But, no, as of right now I’m not in Ahsoka.” Regardless, there’s probably a better chance for Bo-Katan to be someone’s favorite Star Wars character than Jar Jar. We might just have to wait another 24 years to find out, though.

The Mandalorian season 3 is streaming on Disney Plus. New episodes release on Wednesdays.
