Everybody knows – or at least they should by know – that stellar reviews don’t mean a thing when it comes to a Netflix original series being renewed for additional seasons. Fortunately, Arcane backed up its unanimous acclaim with bumper viewing figures, ensuring the animated League of Legends spin-off would return for at least one more run of episodes.
The downside is that the show’s return was officially confirmed shortly after the initial batch dropped in November of 2021, but we’re now a year and a half removed, with no idea of when season 2 is going to land. Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent recently offered a discouraging update that hinted it might not be until 2024, but at least showrunner Christian Linke has offered another on how post-production is progressing.
It’s hardly an earth-shattering reveal destined to stir up renewed excitement in the Arcane fandom, but it’s a start. After all, we’re talking about not just the first-ever streaming series to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, but Netflix’s single best-reviewed episodic exclusive of all-time.
Boasting a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100 percent from critics, an equally impressive 96 percent user approval rating, and a 9/10 average on IMDb from over 228,000 votes, Arcane additionally holds the distinction of being the top-rated video game adaptation there’s ever been on both of those aforementioned sites, having managed to shrug off the challenge of The Last of Us.
Any notable fantasy always runs the risk of being cast aside by Netflix, but no matter how long it takes, it remains reassuring to know Arcane will definitely be back.
