The countdown to season 5 of The Vampire Diaries is winding down and The CW has just released all-new character posters to help get us through the last few weeks of TVD withdrawal.

The countdown to season 5 of The Vampire Diaries is winding down and The CW has just released all-new character posters to help get us through the last few weeks of TVD withdrawal.

Although the eight posters vaguely resemble something you might find in a high school yearbook – plain background, no props, nothing particularly flashy – it’s nice to see familiar faces back in Mystic Falls. The bulk of the characters recently graduated and are heading to college in the fall, but not before hosting a homecoming welcome for many of our favorites who have been a little scarce as of late.

Tyler (Michael Trevino), who’s been running and hiding from Klaus (Joseph Morgan) for the tail-end of season 4, is coming home with the Original’s blessing. Matt (Zach Roerig) has been off seeing the world with Rebekah (Claire Holt) in a very AladdinWhole New World‘ kind of way, and is returning to his old stomping grounds. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) was dead, and now he’s not, thanks to Bonnie (Kat Graham) – who is now dead – and her witch talents. And, it’s probably a safe bet to assume that at leat someone will be happy to see Silas (Paul Wesley) – but only because they think he’s Stefan (also Wesley).

We’re in for a wild ride when The Vampire Diaries returns to a television screen near you on October 3. No Originals, a human Katherine (Nina Dobrev), Silas in the flesh, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (also Dobrev) finally exploring the idea of a relationship without that annoying sire bond to complicate matters. As long as Stefan doesn’t have to spend the entire season underwater, season 5 of The Vampire Diaries might be the best one yet.
