Instead of a hollowed-out husk, the Earth witnessed in this first trailer appears to be a lush oasis, a perfect habitat for its fantastical inhabitants. This might be a post-apocalyptic time period – but its similarity to other works in that domain are scant. Two of the three leads are described as an Elven princess and a half-human half-elf, both of whom make appearances in this brief teaser – alongside a horde of indescribable beasties – as they quest to save the world from an evil demon.

And while it bears all the tell-tale signs of our contemporary obsession with the end of the world, Brooks actually began work on the novels back in the 1970s creating dozens of novel set within its universe. No doubt providing MTV with a vast resource of storylines to pluck future seasons from.

The Shannara Chronicles debuts in January 2016.
