If you’re growing weary of the never-ending stream of post-apocalyptic content being siphoned onto our screens, both big, small and pocket-size, you might dismiss The Shannara Chronicles as more of the same. Developed by MTV, the show is based on a series of novels by Terry Brooks and picks up with the remnants of mankind thousands of years following a nuclear holocaust.
Instead of a hollowed-out husk, the Earth witnessed in this first trailer appears to be a lush oasis, a perfect habitat for its fantastical inhabitants. This might be a post-apocalyptic time period – but its similarity to other works in that domain are scant. Two of the three leads are described as an Elven princess and a half-human half-elf, both of whom make appearances in this brief teaser – alongside a horde of indescribable beasties – as they quest to save the world from an evil demon.
And while it bears all the tell-tale signs of our contemporary obsession with the end of the world, Brooks actually began work on the novels back in the 1970s creating dozens of novel set within its universe. No doubt providing MTV with a vast resource of storylines to pluck future seasons from.
