The Walking Dead Showrunner Promises Great Female-Driven Stories In Season 9

The Walking Dead has never been short on awesome female characters – there’s Carol, Maggie and Michonne to name just the most prominent. If you’re a fan of these and other women on TWD, then you’re in luck, as incoming showrunner Angela Kang has promised that season 9 will feature many “great” female-driven storylines.

Speaking during The Kick-Ass Women of AMC panel at a summit the network was holding in New York on Wednesday morning, Kang promised that the upcoming run would allow the show’s leading actresses the chance to deliver some “incredible work.” That said, the likes of Rick and Daryl will obviously still play all-important roles in the new season, too.

“We’re going to see some really great stories with the women on our show, particularly. And I think for people who are really invested in say Michonne, Maggie, Carol, there’s such great material for them as well as, of course, Rick and Daryl, and those other characters that we love, but for people who are looking for that specifically they will really see some incredible work from our women.”

One character, in particular, that Kang thinks will surprise the audience is Jadis, the former head of the Scavengers as played by Pollyanna MacIntosh. Last time we saw her, she’d been welcomed into the Alexandria community and had revealed that her real name’s Anne. Kang teased that season 9 will unveil a “different aspect of her character.” Presumably, we’ll see her turn over a new leaf as she continues to become more of a people person.

As previously reported, Kang also revealed during the panel that season 9 will feature a time jump, just as we all suspected, as it’ll follow the “New Beginning” arc from the comics. That said, something that’s unique to the show is the upcoming exit of Rick Grimes, as star Andrew Lincoln moves on to new pastures. Likewise, one of those leading women of The Walking DeadLauren Cohan, is making her way out the door, too. Suffice it to say, it’s certainly a time of change for the series, and we can’t wait to see how it evolves from here.
