Where was ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ filmed?

The series, starring Jennifer Garner, is streaming on Apple TV.

When news first spread that Laura Dave’s bestselling novel The Last Thing He Told Me was being adapted into a miniseries, nobody was as excited as the mystery thriller’s legion of fans. The novel follows Hannah (Jennifer Garner of 13 Going on 30 fame) after her husband Owen (Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) disappears in the midst of an FBI raid on his software startup. With the less-than-enthusiastic aid of her teenage stepdaughter Bailey (played by Australian actress Angourie Rice), Hannah embarks on a journey to uncover the truth about the man she loves. Along the way, Hannah and Bailey face obstacles and enemies that will test the pair’s already-awkward relationship, and (hopefully) bring them closer.

The seven-episode limited series will air on Apple Plus starting April 14 with the release of the first two episodes, and the remaining episodes will be released on a weekly basis until mid-May. The Last Thing He Ever Told Me’s screenplay adaptation for TV was co-written by the book’s original author, Laura Dave, in collaboration with Josh Singer, a screenwriter and producer best-known for the Academy Award-winning film Spotlight (fun fact: the two are married in real life).

In the book, Hannah travels from the Sausalito, California home she shares with Owen, to Austin, Texas, where her husband’s past resides. Many book adaptations change some plot details, including location, while becoming screen-ready — and even if the story takes place in a specific setting, it doesn’t mean the crew necessarily films in that location.

The Last Thing He Told Me filming locations

The Last Thing He Told Me is one of those rare TV shows that is actually filmed in the same location as where the plot takes place. Per an interview from TV Guide, the show is filmed in both Sausalito and Austin. About Austin, Garner told the publication, “We took full advantage. We loved U.T. My dad’s an Aggie, so that’s front and center for me, but we loved being on the campus.” Rice noted the Austin weather took some getting used to, despite her native Australia being known for its own hot temperatures. “It was this special kind of heat.”

In addition, Garner was spotted filming in San Francisco; SFGATE reported the actor found time in her busy schedule to take selfies in front of the Golden Gate Bridge while participating in last year’s “teenage dirtbag” trend. For the most part, the cast reportedly stayed low-profile while filming in the Bay Area.

Viewers who are familiar with the filming locations can make a game out of looking for places they recognize in the upcoming episodes. The first two episodes of The Last Thing He Told Me are streaming now on Apple TV.
