Who is Sonya Falsworth in ‘Secret Invasion’? Olivia Colman’s character, explained

Part of the fun of 'Secret Invasion' is trying to guess who is a double agent.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will see a lot of familiar faces in the new Disney Plus series Secret Invasion, including Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, but there are quite a few new characters as well, such as Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth. But just who is this mysterious Sonya and just which side is she on, anyway?

In the show, Earth is subjected to an invasion by a rebel group of Skrulls — aliens who can disguise themselves as anyone on the planet — who plot to plunge the world into chaos through a series of seemingly disparate terrorist attacks. It’s up to Nick and his allies — such as the Earth-friendly Skrull Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, and Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross — to snuff out the invaders and save the planet. But just whose side is Colman’s Sonya working for, anyway?

Who is Sonya Falsworth?

Part of the fun of Secret Invasion is undoubtedly trying to guess who will ultimately prove their loyalty to Terra and who ends up being a double agent. In the case of Sonya, she is presented as a friend of Nick working for MI6 and motivated by trying to protect England from any of the clandestine threats broiling underneath the surface. But that’s just what we know about her character so far.

Colman also hinted that Sonya’s relationship with Nick is definitely one characterized by differing approaches to their spycraft. For instance, the actress said her character is probably skeptical about Nick’s reliance on the Avengers to handle national security threats. As Colman explained to ComicBook,

“Um, but they’re, they’re a little frivolous. Uh, I don’t know. I’ve never thought about that. What she thinks of them in her way. I imagine she’s a little bit dismissive.”

Whether the character differences between Nick and Sonya ultimately culminate in an all-out rivalry in the series remains to be seen.

New episodes of Secret Invasion drop every Wednesday on Disney Plus.
