It’s not uncommon for comic books to course correct and develop stories that differ from their original solicitations. In fact, I expressed concern not long ago when I thought the “Red Meat” story arc that Harley Quinn had been building to was apparently scrapped. Thankfully, it turns out the creative team just pushed it back for a few issues and fleshed things out with “Nether Regions.”
In the latest episode of DC All Access, co-host Jason Inman catches up with series writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner to discuss the anticipated storyline. Now, if you’ve been following the title in recent months, you’re fully aware that the mayor of New York has been hiring cannibals to round up homeless people in an effort to keep the streets unoccupied by destitutes. Once Harley gets a whiff of this, she goes undercover and gets herself in deep, to say the least.
Beyond that, the scribes tease what we have to look forward to in subsequent installments, chief among which is Harley’s parents coming to town. Actually, this was brought up in this week’s issue, so it can’t be too far down the line. And while the titular character’s family life was somewhat explored in the New 52, that’s a well that has been largely untapped, so I welcome learning more about her background.
Additionally, the new backups co-written by Harley’s co-creator, Paul Dini, are touched on. Most fittingly, they have a vibe very similar to that of Batman: The Animated Series, and being someone who read an advance copy, I’ll say that anyone who takes the time to read it is in for a treat.
