With the countdown to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice now well underway, Warner Bros. continues to excite fans with viral marketing. Having done this before with some of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies, it’s no surprise that they’ve decided to do the same with the film that intends to be what many would call the true launch of the DC Extended Universe.
An important aspect of viral marketing is making fans feel like they are taking part in the world of the film that’s being hyped, and so, WB has chosen to portray LexCorp as an actual entity, and it’s made for some entertaining moments and reveals. For one, there was the faux interview with Fortune that revealed that Jesse Eisenberg is, in fact, playing Lex Luthor Jr. in the upcoming blockbuster. This undeservedly caused quite a stir, as many fanboys did not realize that pre-New 52 Luthor was technically Lex Luthor Jr.
Around that same time, LexCorp.io was launched along with a Twitter account. Then, LexCorp decided to provide free Wi-Fi last weekend at New York Comic-Con, which was a smart move for three reasons:
- It raised awareness of the film.
- It made convention attendees view Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment in a favorable light
- It kept up LexCorp’s benevolent facade, not unlike the way the public views it in the world of the film.
Now, the latest piece of viral marketing sees the site offer some sort of newsletter. If one scrolls to the bottom of LexCorp’s page, they will eventually be given the option to enter their name and email address. Upon doing so, they receive the following message: “Thank you for signing up! We’ll send you the latest information on Lex/OS soon.”
There’s no word yet on what will eventually come of all this, but it’s a clever idea on the part of the marketing team and we definitely suggest checking it out, as there will no doubt be some interesting reveals over the coming months.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 25th, 2016.
