Finn’s “Dark Mission” In Star Wars: The Last Jedi Will Include A Tussle With Captain Phasma

At the annual D23 event in Anaheim, John Boyega shed new light on the "dark mission" that awaits Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

John Boyega’s former Stormtrooper FN-2187 Finn wormed his way into the hearts and minds of Star Wars fan thanks to the release of The Force Awakens, but a climactic battle against Kylo Ren left our newfound hero on the brink of death.

Nursed back to health on D’Qar, the primary outpost of the Resistance, Boyega’s bumbling character will be back, back, back in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it would seem Finn hasn’t lost his desire to rise up against his former employers. During the annual D23 event in Anaheim, John Boyega spoke with the folks at Access Hollywood about what’s in store for his character. It involves a “really dark mission,” it seems, and after locking horns with Kylo Ren aboard Starkiller Base moments before the gargantuan weapon collapsed and imploded, The Last Jedi will see Finn set sights on one of Ren’s key emissaries: Captain Phasma.

Lovingly referred to as the Chrometrooper by Star Wars fans, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) is the actress who brings the badass commander to life on the silver screen. Indeed, many believed that Phasma was pushed to the sidelines rather unfairly in The Force Awakens, particularly after featuring so prominently in the movie’s marketing blitz, so Christie’s time in the sun is long overdue.

The finer details of that heated exchange between Finn and Phasma remain clouded in secrecy – and rightfully so – but here, Boyega hints at the road ahead for his Resistance fighter: “It’s gonna be lots of fighting for Finn. A lot of running, a lot of shooting. It’s a really dark mission.”

Not exactly a quote to stop the presses, but it’s intriguing nonetheless – particularly for those Star Wars aficionados among us that enjoy pouring over every new detail. Chances are Finn’s arc in The Last Jedi won’t begin until John Boyega’s lead is fully recovered, but when it does, it sounds like it’ll be worth the wait.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th. And no, Benicio Del Toro is not playing Ezra Bridger.
