Netflix‘s plan for continued and total domination of the streaming wars will eventually see original content supersede pre-existing titles as the dominant force on the content library, but quality should always be prioritized over quantity.
Of course, that hasn’t always been the case, and there’s a massive amount of in-house projects that the algorithm doesn’t even deem worthy of your homepage when you’re scrolling through the app trying to settle on something to whittle away a couple of hours, so plenty of movies and TV shows fall through the cracks on a daily basis.
However, there are currently four Netflix original films among the five most-watched titles on the platform today, and for the most part they couldn’t be more different. The first two installments in the Fear Street trilogy are maintaining a stranglehold on the viewership charts, with Part One: 1994 still in fifth place after eleven days in release, with Part Two: 1978 up in third.
Sandwiched in between the two slashers is David Oyelowo’s well-received directorial debut The Water Man, which sees the actor-turned-filmmaker and Rosario Dawson starring in a heartwarming family drama. Above them all is How I Became a Superhero in second, the French effort that’s became the latest foreign-language feature to gain a global audience.
Andrew Lincoln’s Penguin Bloom and Kevin Hart’s Fatherhood additionally rank among the ten most popular movies at the time of writing, so there are no shortage of Netflix exclusives demanding the attention of a customer base that numbers well in excess of 200 million. We can expect Fear Street Part Three: 1666 to explode into first place by the time the weekend begins, as the streamer continues to lean more and more into entertainment that you can’t find anywhere else.
