Season three of Disney’s The Mandalorian started with the reintroduction of Mando and Grogu, as well as an indication that time jump that Jon Favreau wanted that was poorly executed in The Book of Boba Fett had taken place. While the first episode slowly brought viewers back to the Star Wars universe, it seems like fans were able to figure out what the third installment was going to be about based on details found in episode one alone.
Star Wars fans have suggested that season three is going to be about The Mandalorian’s redemption arc and how redemption doesn’t change your past experience. This theory started when Reddit user u/llinusnepomuk felt heartbroken that the bounty droid, IG-11, who sacrificed itself back in season one, might lose its hero’s death since Mando wants to bring him back to life.
This led to Reddit user u/dkc485 relaying a theory they had after watching the first episode. This user believes that IG-11’s storyline is connected to the Mandalorian’s journey of redemption. Basically, whether you’re atoning for your past mistakes or rebuilding your friend with a new memory chip, it doesn’t change the past. IG-11 will no longer be the same droid they once knew in season one. As for Din Djarin, his redemption won’t wipe away his past actions and experiences.
“I posted this in the main discussion thread, but it’s super relevant here.
“I’m hoping the IG11 storyline is going to be about teaching Mando a lesson. Just cause you can put the droid back together, with the memory circuits destroyed he’s not going to be the same IG that Din and Grogu knew. The same can be said about Din. Getting “redeemed” doesn’t change the experiences he’s had and the good reasons he had to do what he’s done. It’s not all going to go back to what it was before.
“That’s where I’m hoping they go with this.”
This theory sparked debate as to whether or not this was bad writing, especially considering how easily the community was able to figure it out in episode one alone. However, one fan believes that it could be good as long as the payoff is well executed. Meanwhile, others believe that IG-11’s story might have laid the groundwork for where season three is going and that this story of redemption and bringing things back to what they were might lead to Mando finding another path rather than following the way of the Mandalore.
Regardless of the debate about the writing quality, these fans might be onto something. While it’s no surprise that the plot was potentially figured out from just the first episode alone, it could still be an interesting plot to follow, considering that in season two, Bo-Katan pointed out that the Children of the Watch is technically a cult.
Episode one of The Mandalorian season three is now available to stream on Disney Plus.
