DC has a vast lineup of characters that fans are dying to see in live-action. And as the DCU is undergoing a revitalization, these thoughts don’t seem far-fetched. Among those characters is Poison Ivy, the misanthropic botanist who has recently gained a bigger following through the animated hit show Harley Quinn. Featured in several DC productions, the character has been played and voiced by famous names such as Uma Thurman and Maggie Geha as well as by Diane Pershing and Lake Bell. Now, another actress has set eyes on the valuable name from Batman’s rogues’ gallery.
Katee Sackhoff has brought Star Wars’ Bo-Katan Kryze to life across the franchise’s animated works to the mainstream live-action universe. And now she’s hoping to do the same to Poison Ivy, who she has already played in Batman: The Long Halloween film series. In particular, she’s expressed a desire that director Mike Flanagan would come on board to direct her. In a conversation with ComicBook.com, Sackhoff shared her take on getting to play Ivy in live-action and her love for Mike Flanagan’s filmmaking.
“I would like sh*t twice and die to play Poison Ivy… And to work with Mike Flanagan again…He is such a genius and so collaborative.”
If Sackhoff’s wish came true, it would mark a reunion between her and Flanagan, who she worked with in Oculus. She expanded on her experience working with the director on the cult-hit horror movie, saying,
“Working on Oculus was so much fun for me because he allowed me to talk about what I wanted to do with her [the character “Marie Russell]. I love bringing physicality to the roles that I play, and horror is no different…And he was so all in.”
Flanagan is famous for his work in the horror genre, which he has often blended with psychological horror and traumatic drama, which allows him to sway from the common elements of the genre.
Sackhoff’s statement comes at the right time, given that Flanagan’s name has recently come up in other DCU-related conversations. Earlier this week, Flanagan was reported to have pitched a Clayface movie to DC Studios, which he later debunked. But, given Flanagan’s experience with the genre, it would be a great spectacle to have a dark DC film helmed by the director.
Flanagan is coming off a Netflix breakup right now after creating four series for the platform (with a fifth one in post-production), including fan-favorite The Haunting of Hill House. The last film he directed was The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, and he is working on his forthcoming venture, The Season of Passage. If he wants to get back into feature movies, a DC Poison Ivy movie could be a great, though massive, step. DC Studios is currently planning its first chapter for the DCU, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and bringing the likes of Mike Flanagan on board would definitely help the studio with its ten-year plan.
