The Barbie movie, set to be released later this summer, has already created more buzz than a beehive being shaken by a bear. The first trailer, a tongue-in-cheek homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, was released just before Christmas and has led to an unprecedented amount of hype. Now, just a couple of months out from its release, a second teaser trailer has dropped, and boy is it something to behold.
Although we’ve known there’s going to be an incredible cast supporting Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling for quite some time now, the sheer number of incredible actors who make an appearance in this short trailer is enough to fill all the seats at the Academy Awards and more. Though there was little worry that the Barbie hype machine would fail, this new teaser will make sure fans are kept excited by the chance to see just what director Greta Gerwig has done with the iconic character based on the best-selling doll.
The inciting incident of the Barbie film is Robbie’s Barbie being expelled from Barbieland after she fails to live up to what’s expected of her as a Barbie doll, and it follows her attempts to find happiness and purpose in the real world. While many cynics panned the movie before it was even out thanks to its character, the early news is that it’s an incredible watch, with Gosling potentially even in line for an Oscar. With a cast like this, it’s hard not to see the film being anything but a blazing success, even without the irresistable pull that the famous doll has on audiences all over the world.
In the new teaser trailer, we initially see three Barbies besides Robbie: Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, followed by Simu Liu’s Ken. The trailer seems to be setting up a battle for Barbie’s affections between Gosling and Liu’s Kens, while also giving us a first look at Will Ferrell in the role of a toy company CEO. The trailer is soundtracked by ‘Fun Fun Fun’ by The Beach Boys – a suitably sunny tune that is sure to get viewers in the mood for a summer blockbuster.
Other members of the star-studded cast include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Dua Lipa, and John Cena, with Dame Helen Mirren narrating. The film is out in cinemas July 21, and is sure to be a box office hit for both adoring fans of Barbie and ironic watchers – who it seems will end up being pleasantly surprised by what they see.
