The director who almost tackled Sony’s ‘Sinister Six’ gets floated by the fandom for ‘Spider-Man 4’

Why mess with a winning team?

Ever since Andrew Garfield stole every scene he was in during Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony’s prematurely concluded The Amazing Spider-Man franchise has been experiencing something of a revival. Marvel enthusiasts started by reconsidering Garfield’s take on Peter Parker, and are now moving on to a director that was slated to bring a Sinister Six movie to life, featuring villains introduced in the two TASM movies.

Drew Goddard is the latest name to be brought up by fans as a potential substitute for Jon Watts to direct a fourth Spider-Man in the MCU. Although Sony is being secretive about the sequel, Marvel execs have confirmed it’s currently being written.

Watts, who directed the first three Spider-Man movies in the MCU, was attached to Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four film before deciding to take a break from superhero movie making. He’s been busy helming a Star Wars project in the meantime, but fans are hoping he’ll return if a fourth Spidey film is ever greenlit. Additionally, Drew Goddard is reportedly a member of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s writers’ room, tasked with rebuilding Marvel’s eternal adversary, the DC Universe.

Even if Goddard were to jump on this bandwagon, one fan isn’t particularly confident he’d be the right fit. Sure enough, characters like Daredevil and Kingpin would demand a darker turn from what we’ve seen so far in the trilogy, but judging by his plans for the scrapped Sinister Six film, the Bad Times at the El Royale director seems to be way more passionate about the villains than the central hero of the story.

In better news, all Sony-produced Spider-Man movies are expected to gradually join the Disney Plus catalog in the upcoming months, for fans to watch and rewatch until there’s a better picture of what the new film will look like.
