Because good reviews mean squat, Netflix’s new fantasy epic is armed with divine intervention

The last wall of defense

Netflix…*sigh* is hellbent on testing not just loyalties but also the human limit of how long we can suppress our desire to dole out some divine justice as the streamer systematically yanks the rug out from under every popular fantasy series, with Lockwood & Co. being the latest addition to the list. Thus, fearing for the safety of every new fantasy drama that snags our attention is justified. But, in case you are fretting about the latest Korean sci-fi — Black Knightbiting the dust like its peers, let us tell you exactly why it has the least chance of getting canned.

It’s not that shows like Warrior Nun, the recently binned Lockwood & Co., and many others like them didn’t have merit. And oh, we are also not talking about the fact that if we compare statistics, Korean fantasy and fiction shows are yet to match the disheartening pace with which Netflix gobbles up its original series. Yes, Black Knight has had a stellar run so far and has been starring in Netflix’s global top 10 charts in 83 countries. But equally popular shows have been nixed by the streamer despite achieving a lot more.

No, we are talking about the fact that Black Knight has what other shows don’t/didn’t have — actor Kim Woo-bin! The story is set in a dystopian future that is rife with extreme air pollution that has laid the world to waste and left the 1% of survivors to rely on elite delivery drivers for survival. A rather depressing plotline, right? Well, Woo-bin is the ray of true sunshine in this depressing setting as the legendary 5-8.

The 33-year-old Korean megastar is known for shows like Uncontrollably Fond (and getting over is proving to be one Herculean task) and Our Blues as well as box office hits like Alienoid – which ended up being one stellar comeback film for the actor who took a break of five years while he battled cancer. The box office numbers confirmed beyond doubt that Woo-bin’s star power will never be dampened by how long he is away from the screen.

But no matter whether this is your first time meeting Woo-bin or being an ardent fan of The Heirs star is written in bold in your resume, no one is denying that he is the MVP of the Netflix series.

Woo-bin can be all sweet and warm in his shows, but he has proven that there is no matching his charismatically macho vibe.

Even Netflix know what, or more precisely who is running the show.

Someone has joined the internet’s exclusive list of celebs with potential Daddy material.

While Netflix still remains a loose cannon (with eight more chances to betray us) and can cancel Black Knight just when we think it has cleared the kill zone, it would still go down in history — disappointingly with a cliffhanger intact — as the one show that had the literal personification of divine magnificence driving it.
