In news that we saw coming a mile off, Netflix has gone ahead and cancelled yet another popular fantasy series — that makes 26 genre show cancellations over the past three years — with British supernatural caper Lockwood & Co being the latest to fail to make it to a sophomore run. Assuming attempts to get the company to reverse the decision don’t go anywhere, fans of the YA show may wish to switch their subscription to Prime Video as Amazon Studios is working on something that might be right up their street.
In February 2022, an adaptation of The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne was announced to be coming from the Netflix rival. Described as a “futuristic thriller,” the feature film is set to be based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Stroud, the same author who penned the original Lockwood & Co books. Ironically, Outlaws even has a bonafide Netflix icon in the lead, in the form of Bridgerton season one star Phoebe Dynevor, who will also be executive producing.
According to the official synopsis, The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne takes place in “a fragmented future England, where gunfights and monsters collide, and where the formidable outlaw Scarlett McCain fights daily against the odds. When she discovers a wrecked coach on a lonely road, there is only one survivor — the seemingly hapless youth Albert Browne. Soon, new and implacable enemies are on their heels and a relentless pursuit continues across the broken landscape of England. Scarlett must fight to uncover the secrets of Albert’s past — and come to terms with the implications of her own.”
Things have been somewhat quiet on this front for a while now, no doubt at least partially due to how busy Dynevor is these days — she might become the DCU’s new Lois Lane, after all — but with any luck The Outlaws of Scarlett and Browne, which should provide the perfect treat for those mourning the loss of Lockwood & Co, will be with us sometime later this year.
