Dua Lipa dances the night away in music video for her ‘Barbie’ soundtrack addition

The 'Barbie' hype train continues.

Few upcoming movies have the cultural cache that the Barbie movie does. From the memes, to the sightings, to the complaints – it’s been doing very well in the pop culture parthenon. Now there’s a chance it could get even bigger with the release of pop star Dua Lipa’s video for her new song “Dance The Night,” from the official Barbie soundtrack.

The premise seems to be behind the scenes of the making of the video, a kind of meta nod to the meta awareness of the proceedings. Is it a good song? I am not the person to ask but it sounds like something that people would be into while they’re barbequing in the backyard or trying on a new sweater at Macy’s.

The song’s produced by Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and the Picard Brothers, and there’s a whole lot of pink and a bunch of disco balls. Director Greta Gerwig even makes an appearance at the end of the video. This is the first song from the soundtrack, appropriately titled Barbie the Album, which includes tracks from artists like Haim, Ice Spice and Tame Impala. Other artists include Nicki Minaj, Ava Max, Charli Xcx, Dominic Fike, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Lizzo and Ryan Gosling himself.

Dua Lipa will appear in the movie as well, as a mermaid Barbie. She told Elle the movie centers around “the idea of what perfection should be.

“The film – and there’s a lot of diversity in the cast – is touching exactly on the buttons that maybe it presses, and shows a different story,” she said.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera, Simu Liu and a score of other recognizable names. Barbie and Barbie The Soundtrack release on July 21.
