‘Never Have I Ever’s brand is chaos and confusion’: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan on that sneaky season 4 cliffhanger

Could McEnroe's final send-off be a hint at something more?

It’s senior year at Sherman Oaks High School, and Never Have I Ever is taking us on our last epic journey with Devi, Paxton, and Ben — or at least, we’re supposed to be tiptoeing into our last adventure with the characters we know and love, alongside John McEnroe’s stellar narration.

In fact, it’s McEnroe’s very words that left us scratching our heads and wondering if we’ve really seen the last of the love, friendship, and family magic that Never Have I Ever brought us. As longtime viewers of the show rely on, McEnroe lends comedic relief, snark, and knee-slapper jokes to the series as the storyteller — and his final send-off might not be so final after all.

In four words, McEnroe gave fans of the series a bit of hope that something might draw our favorite characters together once more, “Signing off… for now,” and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Devi, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what she thinks that sneaky statement meant.

“I’d love to tell you what that means, but I’m not one of the writers. I remember reading the script, and I’m pretty sure my reaction was something along the lines of, ‘Ain’t no way.’ I don’t know what the ‘for now’ means, but it makes sense it exists, because Never Have I Ever‘s brand is chaos and confusion. That’s what we do. So it makes sense.”

Chaotic and confusing are definitely two words that could be used to describe Never Have I Ever, and as the series draws to an emotional conclusion, a few more also come to mind: epic, adventurous, heart-warming, family-oriented, and powerful. The series has been a fantastic addition to our watch list for the last few years, and as we said above, we’re not against revisiting these characters in their next chapter of life.

You can watch Never Have I Ever in its entirety on Netflix now, and you’ll want to make sure you have some tissues handy!
