Popular podcasters who self-identify as center-right are finally finding out that Donald Trump is the liar he’s always been. And they want everyone to know that they finally caught on.
Andrew Schulz is a rising comedian who made a name for himself through short YouTube clips cut from his long-form stand-up specials. To his credit, his strategy was so effective that it basically changed how most comedians approach self-promotion in the industry, and it spawned a lucrative podcast that hosts his fellow budding comedians.
The show was already big coming off the pandemic, but when they managed to secure a Trump interview, it all but seemed that they had officially cemented themselves as the voice of a particular subsection in American culture. Schulz was even declared by The New York Times to be “America’s Foremost Political Journalist.”
A claim that became even more ridiculous as the text of the interview revealed itself. Schulz spent the entire duration of the interview defending himself about why he didn’t choose to press Trump on any topic because he was more interested in “conversation.” In other instances, Schulz has been open about his decision to vote for Trump. Which, on the surface level, is fine; that’s what democracy is about. But he defended his decision on the basis of how Trump is cool, saying Republicans are now the face of cool, like how Bill Clinton was in the 1990s when he played a saxophone on a talk show. Schulz is more interested in the performance and posturing of a politician than any policy they might champion.
All this is what makes the recent political 180 from the comedian bewildering. Now, he claims to be disappointed in Trump because of policy choices and how he approached the Jeffrey Epstein debacle — something he never even cared to bring up during his almost two-hour-long interview with the president. According to Variety, Schulz told his podcast co-hosts, “I voted for none of this. He’s doing the exact opposite of everything I voted for. I want him to stop the wars — he’s funding them. I want him to shrink spending, reduce the budget — he’s increasing it. It’s like everything that he said he’s going to do — except sending immigrants back, and now he’s even flip-flopped on that, which I kind of like.”
Meanwhile, Joe Rogan has seemingly also turned his back on Donald Trump. Rogan has already expressed how shocked he has been by the recent actions of Trump’s immigration enforcers, noting that instead of targeting gang members, they’re ambushing migrant gardeners and construction workers. Again, this is also something that Trump always said he would do, and Joe Rogan also had him on his show and never showed any suspicion when Trump claimed he wouldn’t target migrant workers. But we now know that even their endorsement was pressured by Dana White — who is now being rewarded by a UFC championship at the White House lawn.

Trump’s legacy is being drawn, and the more the days pass, the more awful it starts to look. It’s expected that his hangers-on are trying to jump ship. A lot of people online are reading this situation as a case of Trump running a big con. But what it really is is podcasters whose main agenda is riding the wave that seems strongest at any point in time. Trump’s wave has just subsided.
