Trump-Epstein drama gets murkier as woman, who played key role in putting Jeffrey Epstein and Diddy behind bars, is fired

And of course, no explanation is given.

Maurene Comey, a senior trial counsel at the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, was fired on Wednesday. The sudden dismissal comes after her involvement in high-profile cases including Jeffrey Epstein and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

According to Politico, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey had worked in the U.S. attorney’s office for almost ten years. During her time there, she played a key role in prosecuting both Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell in significant sex trafficking cases.

No explanation was given for her firing, according to sources close to the matter who wished to remain anonymous, a concerning development given that Diddy has been accused of creating a 19-page to-do list instructing his family to ‘find dirt’ on his accusers. The decision apparently did not come from the office’s interim U.S. attorney, Jay Clayton, suggesting it originated from Justice Department headquarters.

Recent controversies surrounding Epstein files spark debate

The firing happens amid growing tension over the Justice Department’s handling of Epstein-related documents. President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have faced criticism for not releasing additional files connected to the disgraced financier’s case.

Maurene Comey has recently become a target of criticism from Trump’s supporters, including Laura Loomer, who publicly called for her firing in May. Loomer has been leading protests about the Justice Department’s decision to withhold certain Epstein-related documents.

The dismissal also comes at a time when the Trump administration is reportedly investigating her father, James Comey. These investigations are said to be related to his role in examining connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, as well as a recent Instagram post that Trump allies viewed as threatening.

The Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office has faced other recent challenges. Earlier this year, several prosecutors, including the acting U.S. attorney, resigned in protest when the Department of Justice ordered them to stop investigating New York City Mayor Eric Adams for corruption.

In a show of support following her dismissal, dozens of prosecutors from the office joined together to escort Maurene Comey out of the building on her final day. Her most recent work included being part of the prosecution team in the Sean “Diddy” Combs case, which began with his arrest in New York on serious sex trafficking charges, though the prosecution did not secure convictions on the most serious charges.

Maxwell, who Comey helped prosecute, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking, though she is appealing her conviction. Epstein, who was charged with sex trafficking of minors in 2019, died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial.
