‘Going the extra mile to punish regular people’: Trump just stopped you getting compensation for flight disruptions

Remember this the next time your flight is canceled or delayed.

Donald Trump always stands up for the little guy! Yeah, right. If you actually believe that you’re a chump, as Trump has spent practically his entire life stomping as hard as he can on regular people in favor of himself and his rich buddies.

Now, thanks to Trump, you will no longer be able to claim compensation from airlines for disrupted flights.

This Biden-era plan was intended to match European consumer protection laws that say if your flight is delayed, canceled, overbooked, or if you miss a connection, you are entitled to compensation. Europeans can claim up to $700 for delays, get a full refund for cancellations, and airlines have a “right to care” for passengers, meaning they must provide meals, refreshments, and even hotel rooms in case of overnight delays.

You were set to enjoy all these rights too, until the Trump Transportation Department bowed to corporate pressure and snatched them away from you. They confirmed this isn’t going to happen yesterday, simply explaining that the decision is “consistent with Department and administration priorities.” I’m sure it is.

The corporations get their way

Industry trade group Airlines for America, representing United, Delta, and Southwest Airlines, popped open the champagne to celebrate being able to continue to screw you over:

“We are encouraged by this Department of Transportation reviewing unnecessary and burdensome regulations that exceed its authority and don’t solve issues important to our customers.”

The argument against the rules from airlines is, essentially, that having to pay compensation to you for their mistakes would cost them money, money that they would rather pay as a bonus to their CEO. They dress this argument up with language about “burdensome regulations” and so on, but European airlines seem to manage just fine.

So, the next time you’re sitting in a departure lounge waiting for your gate to be called, glance up at the board and your heart sinks as you see “CANCELLED – CONTACT AIRLINE” next to your flight and realize you’re in for a day of misery, remember that Donald J. Trump is the man stopping you from getting compensation.

If he’d allowed this rule through, you would be entitled to your ticket cost back, a hefty payout, and a hotel room if you needed to wait overnight. Now you don’t get that, so I guess it’s time to lie down on the floor like an animal, use your jacket as a pillow, and get a truly miserable few hours’ sleep as a janitor mops the floor next to your head.
