‘It just kept getting worse and worse’: South Carolina family showed up to their Florida Airbnb and only managed to stay there for three hours

Not even worthy of a 1-star review.

A South Carolina family recently had their Florida vacation ruined after spending just three hours at an Airbnb that fell short in almost every way. The Davis family had planned a four-day trip to explore Fort Lauderdale, but their stay at a rental property in Pompano Beach quickly turned into a disaster. What was supposed to be a relaxing getaway ended with the family packing up and leaving well before their trip had even properly begun.

The mother shared their experience in a TikTok video that has since received over 1.2 million views. She said she picked the location after a Google search showed peaceful images of the area, but the reality was completely different. She described the property as run-down and said, “It just kept getting worse and worse from there.” The video clearly struck a nerve with viewers, many of whom had their own stories about misleading rental listings, reports The Nerd Stash.

The location itself was a major problem. The Airbnb was two blocks from the beach, but getting there meant having to “cross a highway where people are going 60 miles an hour with no crosswalk.” When the family finally reached the beach after navigating that danger, the mother alleged they were “met by five crackheads,” and the atmosphere was nothing like the peaceful environment they had anticipated.

The Airbnb listing photos did not reflect the true condition of the property

Inside the house, things were no better. The family felt the surrounding area was too unsafe to spend four days in, which meant they would likely be stuck indoors the whole time. The interior of the property did nothing to ease their concerns, as it was just as disappointing as everything else they had encountered.

The final straw came when the mother’s daughter tried to take a shower, and a loose ceiling tile “fall down on her head” the moment she moved the shower curtain. The family contacted the property owners to explain that “this was not what the pictures looked like” and that the area did not feel safe.

The owners were made fully aware of the family’s concerns about both the condition of the property and the safety of the surrounding neighborhood. It is not yet clear whether the family will receive a refund for their shortened stay. Florida has seen plenty of unusual stories lately, like the time a Florida man found a fanny pack filled with $30k and tried to return it to its owner.

The video sparked a lot of discussion online, especially from Florida residents who knew the area well. Several commenters questioned the choice of Pompano Beach, with one person saying, “Pompano beach is not a destination vacation area.” Another commenter called the beach “a dump.”

Many locals seemed unsurprised by the family’s experience, suggesting that the neighborhood’s reputation was well known to anyone familiar with the region. When some viewers accused her of not doing enough research before booking, the mother pushed back, saying, “I did actually… Google reviews aren’t honest, I guess.”

Her comment points to a growing concern among travelers about how reliable online reviews and listing photos really are. The gap between what is shown in a listing and what a traveler actually finds upon arrival has become a common complaint across rental platforms. Other viewers shared tips to help people avoid similar situations in the future.

A person wrote, “I always Google Street view maps before I stay somewhere.” Another person said they now use TikTok videos instead of Google reviews to check out locations before committing, and claimed it has saved them from several bad experiences. Florida locals have shown their good side too, as seen when three Florida teens helped a stranger change a tire only to end up having to call 911 in an urgent turn of events.
