Teenager’s miracle invention stops bleeding from gunshot wounds in seconds, will soon save lives everywhere

There’s a brand new bleeding control gel on the market, called TRAUMAGEL, and first responders are already using it to stop bleeding from traumatic injuries like gunshot wounds in a matter of seconds. A teenager developed it in a winery lab, and it’s quickly changing the way medics respond to crime and high-pressure situations.

According to Joe Landolina, the CEO and co-founder of Cresilon, the company that developed the gel, severe bleeding is responsible for over 35% of all prehospital deaths.

According to Fox, Fire departments across the country are already using the gel, and it was even used to save the life of a firefighter. The story behind TRAUMAGEL is honestly incredible. Joe Landolina developed the technology when he was just 17 years old. He told me that his grandfather was a retired chemist who owned a vineyard in upstate New York, and he would work with him every single day after school.

The gel that is saving lives across the United States

While working with his grandfather, Landolina developed a strong love for chemistry. Plant-based chemistries from ingredients found in nature around him. He said that at the age of 17, he was experimenting with polymers extracted from the cell walls of algae and discovered a matrix that would instantly bond to living tissue.

He took his idea to New York University’s business plan competition, and that’s when Cresilon was born. The company now has a 55,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility in Brooklyn with nearly 100 employees.

TRAUMAGEL is already changing how medics respond to high-pressure situations. Lieutenant David Kleiman of Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services said, “TRAUMAGEL has impacted how we respond to traumatic injuries in any situation. In the past, with junctional injuries, like the neck, armpit, or groin, we were using traditional methods like digital pressure or wound packing. That required multiple crews and took time. With TRAUMAGEL, we can administer a hemostatic agent that controls bleeding in seconds. Crews can move on to quicker assessments and treatments and get the patient to definitive care faster.”

In one recent case, a firefighter from Cobb County was injured while responding to an abandoned house. He tripped and cut his hand on broken glass, and he was unable to stop the bleeding himself.

Kleiman recalled, “He eventually realized he couldn’t control the bleeding and made his way back to the engine. The crew noted that he was pale and sweaty and that his turnout gear was saturated in blood. Traditional methods failed, so they administered TRAUMAGEL. It instantly stopped the bleeding.” The firefighter was treated for blood loss and fully recovered after surgery.

Severe bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma, and TRAUMAGEL could be the solution.
