Donald Trump has unveiled a new and deeply ironic foreign policy project: the “Board of Peace” for Gaza. From the look of its executive members and invite list, it’s less a peace council and more a reunion of the world’s biggest geopolitical contradictions.
The Board is supposedly created to guide reconstruction and ceasefire efforts in Gaza. But ironically, its charter does not even mention Gaza (via NY Times). The Board’s roster and Trump’s own invitations have sparked incredulity, outrage, and a massive wave of social media mockery. The executive members Trump has called to sit at his table include a lineup who are anything but peacemakers
It includes Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, who’s accused of war crimes in Ukraine and internationally sanctioned for aggression. Then comes Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister. Nobody needs a reason why he’s the worst person to be on the list. There’s also Tony Blair, former UK prime minister and a key architect of the Iraq War.
The Board also includes several billionaire donors, business executives, and former corporate CEOs. None of them has any direct humanitarian or peacebuilding credentials. And who’s conveniently absent? Palestinian leaders, Arab states, or Muslim majority countries representing Gaza or wider regional interests.
Instead, Trump’s guest list reads like an Axis of Geopolitical Controversies with a PR spin. And that spin isn’t working. Social media reaction was immediate, scathing, and often blisteringly funny. One user aptly gave the name of the board a spin, calling it “Bored of Peace” instead. “Nobody’s gonna mention we’re just doing group projects with dictators now,” another observed.
Users also put the irony of the Board in blunt words: “So now the future of Gaza is being determined by two warlords and a child predator. Wow.” Another added, “Trump inviting Putin, but not Zelenskyy, tells you everything you need to know about his priorities.” One also hilariously mentioned that Trump is basically “putting together the war criminal avengers.”
In short, the Board appears built not around peace expertise but around political alignment and strategic patronage. But Trump’s conditions for the members straightened the confusion in a second. All members shall pay Trump $1 billion for permanent membership, and Trump has sole veto power over the board’s decisions.
Additionally, no member shall be allowed to serve longer than three years, unless they give a billion dollars in cash within the board’s first year. And the worst one yet, Trump will be the chairman of the board for life. Yes, for life, not till his presidency. That is anything but an attempt to establish peace. It doesn’t take a genius to understand that powerful figures with violent legacies are an unlikely recipe for peace. But that wouldn’t stop Trump from continuing this theater anyway.
