Kentucky woman plays catch with dog near lake. Then a fish steals the ball: ‘Wouldn’t have believed you if you didn’t have a video’

A Kentucky woman’s game of fetch with her dog took an unexpected turn when a fish appeared to join in. TikTok creator Katie (@katie.fitz44) shared a viral video in June 2026 showing what began as an ordinary day by the water near Owensboro, Kentucky.

Then, according to Katie, a fish suddenly leaped from the lake, grabbed her dog’s tennis ball in its mouth, and swam away with it. Katie captioned the video, “Funniest thing I’ve ever seen. It literally jumped out of the water and caught it.”

Rather than giving up on the toy, Katie immediately dives into the lake and swims after the fish. The fish continues trying to escape while the buoyant tennis ball remains lodged in its mouth, creating a scene that surprised both Katie and viewers.

The unexpected encounter quickly sparked thousands of reactions from TikTok users. “This might actually be an original experience,” one commenter wrote. The dog watches the chase unfold from the shoreline, tracking the action as its owner retrieves the prized toy. Another added, “The way he’s trying to swim away but the ball is too buoyant I’m crying.”

Others focused on how unbelievable the footage seemed. “This is what cell phones were made for bc nobody would ever believe this,” one viewer commented. “Honestly I wouldn’t have believed you if you didn’t have a video,” another wrote.

Videos of fish jumping from lakes and rivers are not uncommon. Species such as bass, carp, and other freshwater fish often leap from the water while chasing prey, escaping predators, or reacting to disturbances. However, documented videos showing a fish apparently catching a dog’s tennis ball during a game of fetch appear to be exceptionally rare.

However, a 2025 viral clip showed a dog retrieving a ball from the water while a bass also held onto the toy. The dog returned with both the ball and the fish still attached, creating a scene very similar to Katie’s 2026 video.

And then earlier in 2026, in Hunan, China, a dog gained viral attention when footage showed it carrying a fish back to the water. The footage showed the dog named Rhubarb gently picking up the fish, walking to the water’s edge, and releasing it.

Viewers reacted to the unusual animal interaction, although the video does not prove the dog understood the situation in human terms.
