A woman said she divorced her husband after he voted for Donald Trump. The woman, who goes by Christian, wrote in her TikTok video caption, “Posting this on the day of the midterms feels almost poetic. Some of y’all are about to be more upset about my divorce than I am.” On-screen text in the video stated, “I divorced my husband for voting for donald trump.”
Christian said the decision followed six months of conversations before their separation. She explained that her husband kept telling her he did not even like Trump, yet every talk turned into him defending Trump or repeating the same points. She said he did not seem informed about much of anything and questioned why he defended the candidate so strongly if he did not like him.
She said the issue became personal because she is a survivor of sexual assault. Christian told her husband she did not think she could stay married to a man willing to vote for someone that had been found liable for sexual assault, adding, “Like, that does not make me feel safe.” She said he would invalidate her and tell her she could not put that on him. She acknowledged that people can vote however they want but said she also has the right to decide what kind of person she spends her life with.
Christian recounts the counseling session and her view that deeper issues were already present
Christian said the more she raised the topic, the more her husband claimed she was attacking him. She added that she is sure there are things she could have handled better. They saw a counselor one time, and she said the counselor told him he really needed to consider what was important to him, “which clearly wasn’t me.”
Looking back, Christian said the problems were already in the marriage and that the voting issue simply brought everything to the surface. She described her husband as very selfish, said he did not have any empathy, and stated that he certainly did not consider her feelings ever. She said she spent six months trying to explain over and over how deeply hurtful the situation was and what his vote would stand for, but she could not keep having the same conversation.
She said she wanted things to work, wanted him to change his mind, and wanted him to choose her. Christian stated that she told him, “Voting this way is going to change the way that I see you.” She said she gave ample warning, yet he ultimately decided to cast his vote for Trump. She believes he did it in spite of her because he could not have a woman telling him what to do.
Christian listed several issues she sees as atrocities in the country, including the war with Iran, the Epstein files, the cost of living, affordable healthcare, and American citizens being murdered in the streets by ICE. Immigration enforcement has also made some Trump voters rethink their choice, such as a Texas woman who regrets voting for Trump after ICE detained her brother.
She said those were the things he thought were more important than his wife. She added that she is sure he still blames her 100 percent for what happened, takes no accountability, and never offered an apology.
She suggested it may not have been about politics at all as much as it was about values and empathy and respect and consideration. Christian said she deserves that and deserves someone who would choose her. During the separation, she said her cat died, her uncle died, and her grandmother died, and he refused to offer any type of support. She noted that in North Carolina, a couple must be separated for a year before they can file for divorce.
Christian said she does not regret standing up for what she believed in or what she felt she needed from a marriage. She thinks she is a better person because of it and is in a better place. She told other women to stop sacrificing their happiness, their peace, and their emotional well-being for a man that cannot even be bothered to consider they’re yours.
She added that women spend so much time trying to understand men, making excuses for them, trying to compromise, and giving them chance after chance, then asked who is doing that for them. She said a relationship should not require you to abandon yourself in order to make other people comfortable. Her frustration touches on a wider debate over gender and politics, as one Christian nationalist blames women and questions their voting rights.
Christian said she has been seeing more stories about women ending marriages and relationships over their husbands’ or significant others’ support for Donald Trump. She thinks there is a much bigger conversation to be had about political differences and fundamental values and what happens when that starts affecting a marriage. She invited viewers to share their stories or suggested they could make a documentary.
Several viewers responded by sharing experiences that echoed the themes in Christian’s video. One person described a long marriage that ended for the same reason, writing, “I left my husband of almost 25 years for the same reason.” Another commenter said their relationship had reached an earlier stage when politics became an issue, noting, “I ended my engagement because my ex fiancé voted for Donald Trump.”
A separate reply pointed to personal loss connected to the same political figure, stating, “I lost my dad to the man.” Other responses were shorter and more direct. One viewer wrote, “You’ll be fine,” while another said, “You did him a favour.” A further comment simply added, “Yeah he deserves so much better.”
