Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi just made a solemn promise after a series of U.S. and Israeli strikes that have rocked the region. Per The Hill, he stated, “We are defending ourselves whatever it takes, and we see no limit for ourselves to defend our people, to protect our people.”
The joint strikes have thus far resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alongside several other significant political and military figures in Tehran. With Khamenei gone, an interim leadership council has stepped up to run the country. This council includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Guardian Council jurist member Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, and the head of the Iranian judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i.
The human cost of these strikes has been devastating. More than 200 Iranians have been killed, according to reports citing the Iranian Red Crescent Society. On the U.S. side, three American service members have been killed, and five others were injured, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command.
This is a conflict that can easily spiral out of control
Trump weighed in on Saturday, suggesting that the strikes offer a unique opportunity for the Iranian people to take control of their country. He pointed out that the Islamic Republic has been in charge since the Iranian Revolution wrapped up in 1979. “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take,” President Trump told the Iranian public. He even added, “This will be, probably, your only chance for generations.”
The president also issued a stern warning to the Iranian government. He advised the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and the police to “lay down your arms” to avoid “certain death.” That’s a direct and serious threat, no doubt.
Foreign Minister Araghchi quickly pushed back against Trump’s words. On Sunday, he stated that “any leader of a country has no right” to dictate Iran’s response. In fact, Iran has already launched its own retaliatory drone and missile strikes. These attacks have targeted U.S. bases in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. They’ve also launched attacks against Israel, which tragically resulted in nine casualties.
Araghchi emphasized his point, saying, “So, one should tell the president of the United States, do not attack, do not make any aggression against another country.” He then drove home Iran’s position: “But nobody can tell us that you don’t have any right to defend yourselves.”
