Most people grab a canned drink from the fridge and open it without a second thought, assuming the manufacturing process keeps everything clean and safe. But a recent TikTok video by a user named Tjayne, or @taylor0427, might make you think twice about that habit. She cut open her Starbucks Doubleshot Energy Coffee Vanilla after it tasted off, and what she found inside is hard to watch.
In the video, Tjayne cuts the can open in real time and says, “Dude, this is so nasty.” Someone in the background adds, “Literally, just try to drink your energy drink, open it this morning, hoping you can get some nice energy.” As she looks inside, she exclaims, “Oh, that’s so big,” before revealing a mouse inside the can to the camera, reports Brobible.
Things get worse when she pours the remaining liquid into the sink and spots small brown pieces in the drink, saying, “That’s poop, that’s freaking poop.” The woman in the video then dumps the mouse onto a paper towel, immediately feels sick, and moves off camera. Tjayne is heard repeating, “Shut up, shut up, shut up,” before concluding, “This is so nasty.”
Finding a mouse in a sealed can is not as rare as you might think
The reaction online was intense. One commenter wrote, “Did you drink it?” and someone else replied, “she drank half before noticing 💔” while another urged, “WAS THERE NOTHING OFF ABOUT THE TASTE😭??” One person joked, “It’s more afraid of you than you are of it. Starbucks has been in the news for other reasons lately too, as a customer who paid it forward after a rude encounter went viral on social media.
PepsiCo, through a North America Coffee Partnership spokesperson, responded to the incident by email, stating, “We take product quality and safety extremely seriously, and our manufacturing process includes multiple safeguards designed to prevent foreign material from entering sealed containers. We are in contact with the consumer and conducting a thorough investigation.”
It is not entirely clear how a mouse could end up inside a sealed can, but the general belief is that it happens during the packaging process before the lid is sealed. This is also not the first time such a story has made headlines. Just a week before this video surfaced, a news station in Virginia reported on a customer finding a dead mouse inside an energy drink, and similar stories have appeared on Reddit and TikTok.
Past legal cases show how messy these situations can get. In 2012, a man sued PepsiCo after claiming he found a dead mouse in a can of Mountain Dew. The company settled the case but argued that the soda would have dissolved the mouse over time.
In another case, a Michigan woman sued Monster Energy over a similar claim, which the company denied. A lawyer for Monster stated, “Strict manufacturing processes and technology make it impossible for a mouse to be sealed inside a Monster Energy drink. The lawsuit is frivolous, and Monster Energy looks forward to, once again, exposing this hoax.”
Whether or not every claim like this holds up, these incidents are becoming harder to ignore as more videos and reports continue to surface across social media and news outlets. Starbucks has also been making headlines for other controversies, including how their new online ordering system is frustrating customers.
