Officers first responded to a home in the city, located about 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, after they received reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found four people who had been fatally shot, reports CNN

Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies shared these updates during a news conference. Chief Kies said the investigation began as soon as the department was alerted to the violence at the home. Officers then searched the surrounding area and found McFarland on a city trail.

According to Chief Kies, the situation ended during this encounter on the trail. “While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life,” he said. Local authorities are now working through a large amount of evidence to understand how the events unfolded.

The investigation grew further when police found two more men who were also believed to be relatives of the suspect. These victims were found in separate places elsewhere in Muscatine. One man was found dead in his home, and the other was found inside a business.

While six lives were lost, authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or any specific details about their identities. Chief Kies spoke about how difficult the circumstances were. “Today I simply do not have the words,” Kies said. “This act of evil and what it has done to our community.”

The Muscatine Police Department is currently managing several crime scenes as it continues the investigation. Officers are conducting interviews and processing the evidence gathered from the home, the trail, and the other places where victims were found.

Chief Kies confirmed that McFarland had a criminal record, though he declined to share any specific details about that history at this time. Anyone with information that could help the police with this case should contact the Muscatine major crimes unit. More updates are expected as the police continue their work, which may include details such as how a man was declared dead by mistake in other reported cases.police continue their work, which may include details such as how a man was declared dead by mistake in other reported cases.
