‘Hula-hoops with lights’: Minnesota police employees report a color-changing UFO, prompting an FBI investigation

It apparently couldn’t produce any explanation.

Several employees at the Anoka Police Department in Minnesota reportedly saw a strange object in the night sky. According to Brobible, on February 19, 2025, at around 1:17 a.m., a group of department members were apparently finishing a post-training debriefing in a parking lot when they spotted something they reported did not look like a normal aircraft.

Their observations were later reportedly recorded in an FBI file. The report apparently describes an encounter that seemingly left even experienced officers without a clear explanation for what they had seen, and the matter was reportedly reviewed by the FBI before being closed without a definitive conclusion.

The witnesses reportedly described a colorful object that did not move like a normal aircraft. According to Fox 9 News, one employee said the UFO looked like six “hula-hoops with lights around each loop,” comparing it to a diagram of an atom.

Witness accounts of the object’s appearance and movement

Another observer reportedly estimated the object was about the size of a school bus or an SUV. Witnesses described bright, shifting colors, including what appeared to be red, blue, green, and white lights coming from the object, according to the records. One person at the scene reportedly said it looked like a “tie dye” shirt in motion.

The group was apparently curious enough that they moved to the nearby Anoka Municipal Ramp for a better view, reportedly watching for almost ninety minutes. Anoka Police Chief Andy Youngquist confirmed that at least one of the witnesses was a sworn police officer. According to the records, the cold weather reportedly made it difficult to use some of their more advanced night vision and magnified optics, though the team apparently attempted to document the event.

The records state that one officer captured video of the object using an iPhone pointed through binoculars. One of the witnesses was quoted as saying, “It was too cold out for us to utilize some of our other magnified optics and night vision however in the future we will work on capturing better quality images and videos with some technology we have available to us,” adding, “I can only assume we will have another opportunity to monitor these objects again as they have been seen in the area in the past.”

According to the FBI documents, the object appeared to move in quick, separate bursts, reportedly heading toward the Monticello Nuclear Power Generation Plant at one point. Witnesses described the movement as erratic, with one person claiming the object appeared to hover before dropping down like a leaf floating on a breeze. Others reportedly compared its path to a stone skipping across a pond, with witnesses alleging it seemed to travel 30 to 40 miles in just a few seconds.

According to Fox 9, despite the detailed accounts and the footage, the investigation reportedly ended without a definitive explanation, and the matter was officially closed. But apparently not everyone agrees on what the evidence shows, liked one California pastor who has suggested Pentagon’s UFO files could be evidence of something other than aliens.

The released files apparently do not offer definitive proof of extraterrestrial life. Officials seem to have largely left it to the public to decide what to make of the sightings.
