New Jersey woman sings to a spam caller instead of hanging up. Then he calls back asking for an encore: ‘Can I clap for you, ma’am?’

Interesting way of handling spam calls. But is it safe?

A TikTok creator from New Jersey took an unconventional approach to handling unwanted calls. Instead of hanging up on a spam caller, she sang to him, performing a musical number that apparently left enough of an impression for the caller to phone back later, hoping for another performance. The interaction, which was shared online, has been viewed more than a million times, drawing attention from viewers who found the exchange both unusual and surprisingly touching.

The creator, who goes by Lara Tamar PA-C (@laratamar_pa) on TikTok, posted a video documenting the encounter. When the spam caller asked whether she would sing for him, she performed the opening song from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a piece that begins with the lyrics, “Little town, it’s a quiet village.” The caller responded by saying, “Can I clap for you, ma’am?” and appeared genuinely impressed by the performance.

During their initial conversation, the caller asked several questions about Lara’s musical background. He inquired, “Are you a singer?” and when she responded that she was not a professional singer, he replied, “But you are too good, ma’am. But you are too good.”

This unexpected moment sparked mixed reactions online

The caller then asked if she had any online accounts where he could follow her and listen to more of her music. When she told him she did not have social media accounts, he said, “My loss,” and the call ended. However, the caller phoned back later, according to the video, specifically to hear her sing again. Sometimes unusual interactions lead to unexpected attention, as when a Texas woman’s hospital stay after avoiding her boyfriend’s bathroom led to a song.

The video sparked considerable discussion in the comments section, with viewers expressing a range of responses to the interaction. Some viewers found the exchange to be oddly touching. One commenter wrote, “You made his day.” Another user referenced documentaries about scam operations, stating, “According to documentaries I’ve seen, a ton of scammers are locked in a building and forced to call and scam people. You made his day.”

Many viewers expressed amusement at the situation. One commenter joked, “Him when he sees this video on your ‘no account.'” Another user commented, “I’m dead you have fans all over the world now.” A notable commenter observed that the song choice was “WILDLY ironic,” speculating that the creator may have given the caller “an escape, for just a minute” through the performance. Customer service disputes can take unexpected turns, as seen when a New Jersey woman sought a refund after the service went wrong.

A notable portion of commenters urged the creator to exercise caution. Some viewers warned that individuals involved in scams have been known to record voices for artificial intelligence-powered impersonation or for identity theft purposes.
