Grocery store runs with two young children are an Olympic-level test of endurance on the best of days. When you are juggling an unsettled newborn in one arm while wrangling a toddler through the aisles, all you want at the end is a smooth checkout. But for Massachusetts mother Ali Hanlon (@ali.hanlon0), a routine trip to Stop & Shop allegedly ended in a comical clash with a 17-year-old cashier.
In a TikTok storytime, Hanlon held nothing back as she detailed an awkward interaction with a teenage cashier. According to her, the interaction began as a mildly irritating lack of basic customer service manners. But it didn’t take much time before dissolving into pure comedy for her. At the end, a single piece of sweet potato brought the transaction to a screeching halt.
Hanlon used the interaction to leave a lesson for other teenage employees and their mothers. But berating a cashier for not saying “hi” or getting confused over an item isn’t completely in the green. So, users were split in the comment section.
A teenage cashier allgedly offered zero greetings to Hanlon at checkout
Hanlon’s grocery run started under stressful circumstances. She explained that she had to navigate the aisles while carrying her crying, three-week-old daughter throughout the entire trip. When she finally reached the front register, she was relieved to find an open lane staffed by an adolescent employee.
Hoping for a quick, pleasant handoff, Hanlon placed her groceries onto the conveyor belt and allegedly offered a cheerful greeting. To her dismay, the young worker allegedly ignored her presence, offering zero verbal acknowledgement, eye contact, or greeting while scanning her items.
Hanlon took the silent treatment in stride. She entered her loyalty number on the keypad herself to lock in her $17 worth of discounts while waiting for the cart to clear. But things took a turn when an older employee arrived at the end of the belt to assist with bagging. According to Hanlon, she warmly greeted and complimented her children.
Meanwhile, the young cashier froze mid-scan. He allegedly held up a single orange spud in the air, and turned to his older colleague with genuine bewilderment. “Um, what is this?” the teen asked.
The confused cashier couldn’t allegedy identify a basic sweet potato
Watching the adolescent stare blankly at a common sweet potato, the older colleague calmly identified the vegetable and provided the PLU code. Meanwhile, Hanlon burst into audible laughter at the register.
“He could not have been more perplexed over what this food item was. And she was like, ‘Oh, that’s a sweet potato. It’s number 4204 or whatever.’ And I couldn’t help but audibly laugh. Like I had to laugh cuz I was like, is he—he’s serious?”
Working a front-end retail register is a foundational first job for millions of teenagers. But according to Hanlon, entering a customer-facing role without basic conversational manners creates unnecessary social friction. “Teach them just like how to be a functioning human and like say hi to others,” she joked.
Closing out her video with a humorous message for parents, Hanlon advised families to quiz their older teenagers on common fruits and vegetables before sending them out to apply for supermarket positions. She added that parents should test their kids on food charts to ensure they know the difference between a sweet potato and rhubarb.
