Sony looks set to lift the curtain on a new hardware of sorts, according to IGN’s media briefing invitation. The document, which pegs the elusive event for Thursday, January 30th, teases the reveal with the tagline: “Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest.”

Though it is by no means confirmed, it’s safe to assume that Sony will be introducing the PlayStation Vita Slim to North America and Europe come next week. The hardware revision, which debuted in Japan last September, is 20% thinner and 15% lighter than the original model. What’s more, the second iteration also ditches the OLED screen in lieu of a standard LCD to create an accessible, and ultimately more affordable model.

Other specs include 1GB of onboard memory and an improved battery, which extends the performance of the device by up to one hour. In addition, that refined battery pack can be charged using a standard micro USB cable, as opposed to the proprietary charger that shipped with the first model.

Upon release, many predicted that the PlayStation Vita Slim would make its way west eventually, and today’s tease is the first tangible confirmation of that forecast. Mind you, given the integration with the PS Vita TV, is it possible that the company will announce a western release date for its micro-console, too? Unfortunately, though, we’ll just have to wait until next week to find out which console Sony has surgically downsized on this occasion.

Tell us, what do you think Sony is teasing? Is the PlayStation Vita Slim heading west? Or could it be a Super-Duper PS3 Slim? Give us your thoughts below.
