True Detective Season Two Will Have Three Leads, Take Place In California

There's been very little news about the upcoming second season of HBO's anthology series True Detective, which premiered its first season to widespread acclaim this past spring. We've heard casting rumors, from Brad Pitt to Jessica Chastain, and buzz that series creator Nic Pizzolato was looking at centering the second season on female detectives, but there's been next to no official information about what's next for True Detective. That is, until today.

There’s been very little news about the upcoming second season of HBO’s anthology series True Detective, which premiered its first season to widespread acclaim this past spring. We’ve heard casting rumors, from Brad Pitt to Jessica Chastain, and buzz that series creator Nic Pizzolato was looking at centering the second season on female detectives, but there’s been next to no official information about what’s next for True Detective. That is, until today.

Speaking on the To The Best of Our Knowledge podcast, Pizzolato stated:

“Right now, we’re working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did with season one.”

Most of us had assumed that True Detective‘s second season would center again on a pair of detectives, but I’m intrigued by the idea of Pizzolato widening the net to focus on three main characters. Of course, there’s no guarantee all three leads have to be detectives, though at least one of them will certainly wear a badge.

Pizzolato also stated that planning for the second season is complete and the show will “probably start casting within the coming month” for a new set of characters. Chastain denied reports that she would be involved, and Pitt has been quiet about his purported involvement, so which actors will take on the three main roles is currently a complete mystery.

When speaking about the second season with HitFix back in March, Pizzolato did let slip another bit of information about what’s coming next, albeit in a cryptic way. He said:

“This is really early, but I’ll tell you [it’s about] hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.”

So, we’ll probably hear more about the second season of True Detective within the next few weeks, but early signs are highly promising. With Pizzolato still involved, chances are that True Detective will deliver a second season worthy of following its terrific first.
