A group of naive teenagers? Check. An ill-advised trip to a cabin in the woods? Check. One marauding psychopath intent on ruining the long-awaited vacation? You bet. All of these generic conventions and more feature in Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn, a teen horror title that has been wholly rebuilt for PlayStation 4.
Originally, the genre-inspired game was unveiled in 2012, where it was billed as a PlayStation 3 exclusive that took full advantage of the console’s controversial Move controller. Fast forward two years and Until Dawn is now a third-person horror adventure due for release in 2015.
Channeling the schlock-horror elements found in movies such as Scream and Halloween, Until Dawn tells the story of eight innocent teenagers trying to survive the worst night of their lives — or the annual Blackwood winter getaway, as it’s known in the game. Utilizing full motion capture, Supermassive’s long-in-development title also features Hayden Panettiere — of Heroes fame — who lends her appearance for the title.
In terms of gameplay, it’s understood that Until Dawn will force players to explore and investigate the surrounding area in search of clues and potential weapons. Interestingly, the game will also have you play as all eight of the aforementioned teens, and your moral choices will have a direct impact on the final outcome of the story. Who lives and who dies? You decide.
Supermassive’s genre title has been simmering in the bowels of development since 2012, when it was unveiled in August following an untimely leak. In the build-up to Gamescom, however, it was clear that Sony was preparing to reintroduce the IP, after it renewed the game’s trademark and also released a pair of terrifying teaser trailers.
Until Dawn will launch exclusively for PlayStation 4 in 2015.
