Microsoft has unveiled Halo: Spartan Strike, the latest top-down entry into the franchise coming by way of 343 Industries and Vanguard Games. Bearing resemblance to last year’s Halo: Spartan Assault, the twin-stick shooter will arrive on PC through Steam and Windows 8 devices on December 12th, 2014.
Priced at $5.99, 343 Industries’ latest is said to take place during the events of Halo 2, with players tasked with charging a legion of Spartan soldiers through the lush jungles and in-game environments in the 30 mission campaign, gaining access to “all-new arsenal of weapons, abilities and vehicles” in the process.
While it’s not strictly speaking a sequel, the developing team stated in an interview with IGN that players who dabbled with Spartan Assault will feel right at home with Halo: Spartan Strike — though whether the latter makes the jump to Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the vein of its spiritual predecessor remains to be seen.
Because Vanguard Games’ title is launching across a variety of Windows 8 platforms, players who buy the game on one device will be able to download Spartan Strike on tablet and PC or vice versa. Moreover, following feedback from the gaming community, the studio have decided to remove microtransactions from the game in their entirety.
